Enjoy Deep-Fried Oreos & Twinkies Recipe with M&M Candy

The deep-fried treats are made by taking an ordinary chocolate sandwich cookie filled with white cream and hot frying it in oil until crispy on the outside. The chocolate cookie exterior of the deep-fried Oreos and deep-fried Twinkies becomes crunchy while the interior remains soft and delicious cream filling melts within the warm pastry. They are briefly dipped into powdered sugar or cinnamon to give them that extra sweet swirl.

This recipe of deep fried Oreos and deep fried Twinkies makes around six to seven Oreos and four or five Twinkies. I chose not to include any measurements for the ingredients because it is largely dependent on how many of each treat you wish to make, as well as how big of a pot you are using (to fry them in). The ingredients that I used were the same for both treats.

Ingredients

  • 2 cup Crumbs Mix
  • Water
  • Vegetable Oil
  • ¾ teaspoon vanilla extract

Filling Ingredients:

  • Mini M&M’s (color of your choosing)
  • ½ teaspoon shortening (for cream filling)
  • 1 cup confectioners’ sugar

Steps

  1. Start by preparing the batter for both treats. In a small bowl, combine all dry ingredients with water and mix well. Set aside. Don’t overmix or you’ll have tough cookies! Let batter sit for 10 minutes so that it can thicken up a bit.
  2. Melt chocolate chips in the microwave according to package instructions and transfer chocolate into a piping bag (or zip-top bag). Snip off one very small corner of the bag.
  3. For deep-fried Oreos and deep-fried Twinkies, take Oreos and Twinkies out of their packages and cut each in half (from top to bottom).
  4. Place M&M’s into a bowl that is just big enough to fit an Oreo or Twinkie upright on its side. Set aside nearby your deep-frying station.
  5. Microwave shortening for 30 seconds–it should be completely melted but not boiling hot. Transfer shortening into a separate piping bag (or zip-top bag) and snip off one very small corner of the bag as well.
  6. On your deep-frying station, place a wire rack on top of a baking sheet covered in foil to catch any drips. Arrange three or four Oreos and Twinkies upright so that they are stable enough for dipping–if you have more than one frying pan going at once, keep the number of treats limited so as not to overcrowd the frying area (otherwise the fried batter will start flying out!). I used tongs (with rubber bands wrapped around them) to hold my treats up vertically while I prepared them.
  7. Working with one treat at a time, dip into the wet ingredients then coat completely with dry ingredients; if chocolate chips were melted properly, they should easily and quick to work with. Let excess batter drip back into the wet bowl, then place the treat on a wire rack and add M&M’s facing outwards. Continue dipping all treats before starting to fry them in batches of two or three (so that you don’t overcrowd the pan).
  8. Heat oil over medium-high heat for around three minutes; it should be 350 degrees Fahrenheit (175 degrees Celsius) when ready. Once your thermometer is at the right temperature, carefully lower each treat into the hot oil with tongs or a fork. Fry for 20 seconds to one minute on each side, until golden brown–be careful not to leave them in too long or they may start to burn! Use tongs or a spatula to turn treats over if needed.
  9. Remove treats from oil and place them back on a wire rack to cool for around five minutes before glazing. If you glaze while they’re still hot, the chocolate will melt off! You can also wait a little longer so that the glaze has time to set.
  10. Glaze all deep fried Oreos and deep fried Twinkies by passing through melted chocolate, letting excess drip back into the bowl, and then transferring onto wax paper to harden (for easy clean-up). Repeat with remaining treats and enjoy!
